THE ROCKLAND UKULELE SCENE
Ukes For Everyone In Rockland
Whether you’re in town for the world-renowned Maine Lobster Festival, stopping by on your way through to Bangor, or you call this city home, Rockland serves as a cultural hub for Midcoast Maine with world-class food, an incredible art museum, historic inns, and a beautiful harbor.
Most tourists are – of course - here for the lobster, but that’s not all this quintessential Maine getaway destination has to offer. The city is also fast becoming known for its incredible ukulele scene, too.
As any uke enthusiast would tell you, there’s nothing quite like playing the four-stringed instrument with others - and that’s where Rockland’s uke community shines. The city’s main ukulele club, Ukes Rock, welcomes all skill levels to join them on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 until 7:30pm to jam, sing and get to know the area’s uke enthusiasts. If performing is more up your alley, you don’t need to find another uke group who will get you on stage – these guys do that too. Ukes Rock often plays local events in the Midcoast Maine region and has even scored themselves a recurring spot at the annual Belfast Ukulele Festival.
The all-day fest takes place every summer at Steamboat Landing and features raffles, uke vendors, jams, and performances from local clubs and professionals. In 2018, musician Gerald Ross headlined the event while local teachers Jeff Weinberger and Frets Halligan led workshops. Its host, the MidCoast Ukes, is another fervent ukulele club in the area.
When they’re not parading their ukes downtown or participating in a local event, the Midcoast Ukes meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 until 7:30pm (practice schedule and performance information can be found here), usually at the Spring Brook Hills Club House. Members have a wide range of ukulele skills, so whether you’re a professional or a beginner who has yet to learn the first three basic cords, you’re welcome at Midcoast Ukes.
