Ukuleles – Baltimore, Maryland
It doesn’t get much more American (in every aspect of the word) than in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. If you’re looking for a true slice of Americana the history of this city is the absolute ultimate, with natives and previous residents like Edgar Allen Poe, singer Billie Holiday, actor and filmmaker John Waters and the legendary Babe Ruth. And if that’s not enough for you, the Star-Spangled Banner was composed by Francis Scott Key in Baltimore in the war of 1812. Almost a third of the city’s buildings have been classified as historical landmarks, so in the streets of Baltimore you are fully aware that you’re in the presence of greatness.
How does the ukulele measure up to all of this? Very well, actually. The Baltimore Ukulele Club gathers monthly and included in their schedule are beginner and intermediate as well as ukulele jam sessions. To keep things interesting, they regularly change group leaders and locations for their members to be able to explore different parts of the city. They also post events and host ukulele players from all areas of the US do broaden their horizons. Get in touch with this amazing group through their Facebook page which is listed below.
Forty-five minutes west of Baltimore, the Maryland Ukulele Jam gather for a “Monthly Jam” which is in reality two jam sessions divided up by a meet and greet section and announcements on upcoming events such as performances by the group and guest musicians. Getting in touch with these folks is easier than you think. Just follow the link to their Facebook page listed below.
Half an hour south of Baltimore you’ll find the strumming sounds of UkeAnnapolis in Edgewater, Maryland. They gather monthly and encourage all beginners to join their festivities as soon as possible. This is a three-hour jam session with a focus on the basics and group strumming. All you need to bring is your shiny new Bondi Uke and a copy of the sheet music available on their website. Well, that and a bucket-load of enthusiasm. Get touch with UkeAnnapolis on the weblink listed below.
Make a day trip of it and head on over to Rockville where the School of Music awaits. Kevin heads up the group ukulele classes and all bases are covered. This course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of the small string instrument and spans a month in total. Classes are once a week. If this tickles your fancy, head on over to the weblink below and get going.
If you’re lucky enough to be a Maryland-local and not sure where to spread the wings of your Bondi Uke, try out any of the groups or lessons available in this rocking state, more so in and around the glorious city of Baltimore. You can’t go wrong.
Keep strumming, all!
