The WASHINGTON, D.C. Ukulele Scene
Famous Musicians From Here
Is it just me or is the Washington Uke scene becoming something special? There are more and more young people and children picking up the Ukulele and getting enthusiastic about learning to play. A Ukulele is the perfect instrument for a beginner to pick up and play and it is filling that role more and more recently. Ukes are the user friendly and easy way to get started strumming strings.
With only four strings, the Uke isn’t intimidating - play the strings open and they sound great already. Most people are too intimidated to pick up a guitar and have a strum because they’re so big and bulky and it hurts to press your fingers onto the strings. With all these positives, there have been increasing numbers of schools using Ukuleles for music classes and because kids can learn themselves from Youtube, there’s growing numbers of players all around the Washington area and in wider Maryland.
The other great thing about Ukuleles is their versatility, from their traditional Hawaiian and Portuguese roots through to the jazz of the roaring twenties, a Uke can be used to accompany any number of other instruments and musical styles. It’s actually cool these days to cover the latest pop and hip hop hits on your Ukulele and the videos are going viral all over. These developments are great – the more young people can be empowered and enticed into playing music and making it their own – the more they can play together and in their own styles the easier they will find it to pick up other instruments and to make music for everyone’s pleasure.
The strathmore ukefest in August has become a great inroad to Ukulele culture for young and old alike and this year promises to be no different. A magnet for tourists and a fun packed afternoon for the whole family with all the bells and whistles that go along with it – but you’ll definitely hear more Ukes than bells and whistles though. The fest is a long way off still though, so you have time to practice. Even if you haven’t picked up a Ukulele before – there is no time like the present to get started and get into it, you will surely find others in the Washington area who have also recently begun their musical journeys – or a great player or two who can teach you some more advanced techniques in time for a performance.
With the weather getting warmer there are going to be more and more outdoor get togethers, barbecues, picnics and the like. I for one will be taking my Ukulele along and using the opportunity to practice and find out who else in my community is interested in learning too – or someone who can already play maybe and wouldn’t mind sharing. There are so many musicians around in the Washington area, I will hopefully get lucky and find a jam going on. Don’t be shy, show off your Ukuleles, and all the new songs you’re learning – that’s the best way to improve!
Climate note for your ukulele: DC summers are humid and hot (70-80% humidity, 95F+ days). Winters drop indoor humidity to 20-25% with forced-air heat. The summer-to-winter swing splits bare solid tops. Run a sound-hole humidifier from October through April. Hard case when the uke isn't in your hands. A laminate or sealed solid-top handles the climate better than a bare solid top.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Washington, D.C.
Where can I buy a ukulele in Washington DC?
Bondi ships to DC in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Local shops include Middle C Music on Wisconsin Ave, Action Music in NE DC, and House of Musical Traditions 15 minutes north in Takoma Park. For a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct option.
Are there ukulele lessons in Washington DC?
House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park teaches ukulele alongside other fretted instruments. The Hawai'i State Society 'Ukulele Hui has been running 20+ years and welcomes beginners. The Takoma Park Ukulele Meetup runs free strum-alongs.
When does the DC ukulele meetup happen?
The HSS 'Ukulele Hui meets weekly at the Hawai'i State Society. The Takoma Park Ukulele Meetup posts sessions on Meetup.com. Both are free, all skill levels welcome. Hawai'i State Society membership unlocks the Hui.
What's the best ukulele for a beginner in DC?
A concert-size mahogany with a hard case. DC's seasonal humidity swing splits bare solid tops, so a sealed solid-top or laminate handles the climate better. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with the hard case, gig bag, and songbook. Add a $15 D'Addario Humidipak and run it October through April.
Is there a ukulele festival in Washington DC?
No dedicated festival inside DC. The closest is Virginia Ukapalooza in Charlottesville every April (2.5 hours by car), and ESVA UkeFest on the Eastern Shore in September (3.5 hours). Both are weekend events with workshops, jams, and concerts.
How long does Bondi shipping take to DC?
1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.
Can I find used ukuleles in DC?
Reverb, Craigslist DC, and Action Music's used wall turn over ukes. The catch in DC's climate: a used solid-top may already have a winter crack from a previous owner. Inspect the soundhole edge, the bridge, and the back. New from Bondi includes setup, a hard case, and warranty.
What music has DC produced?
Marvin Gaye, Duke Ellington, and the entire go-go genre (Chuck Brown, Rare Essence, Trouble Funk, E.U.). Hardcore punk (Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Fugazi) was born here too. Modern: Wale fuses go-go into hip-hop, Mya rules R&B. The Funk Parade on U Street every May celebrates the lineage.
