San Diego Is California’s second largest city. Home of the ‘Chargers’, Top Gun, ‘The best weather in the world’ and of course Ron Burgundy, it is known as a laid back city with endless beautiful beaches, year round sunshine and a rich and diverse mix of cultures.

With it’s seemingly endless sunshine and beaches, it is not a surprise that the city has a thriving ukulele scene with players and fans enjoying the island sound in the uke clubs as well as the many Tiki bars that are dotted around the San Diego coastline.

The mellow island culture that the ukulele epitomises is seeing a resurgence at the moment, but in San Diego, a ‘big small town’ it has never gone away.

Every September for the last three years, the San Diego Ukulele Festival organised by local ukelele master Gerald Ross has provided a sparkling weekend of music, hula, and sun kissed fun. With two stages, one for traditional music and one for uke takes on a wide variety of musical styles. The weekend also features ukelele workshops and of course Hawaiian and street food and arts and crafts. The festival is designed to appeal to all ages and is always a great weekend out in the San Diego sunshine

San Diego has dozens of ukulele clubsand four chapters of the Ukulele Society of America.

Sneaky Tiki has been meeting every Tuesday for years, they have regular jams as well as organising classes and workshops for all levels. The group emphasise that they are not traditionalists and all styles of music are welcome at their uke meetings. They have just started the woonderfully named Sea Turtle class for beginners or more casual players

With over 900 members, the largest group in San Diego is the hau`oli strummers . Hau`oli is Hawaiian for ‘happy’ and this group also emphasises that their emphasis is to create an informal and fun atmosphere with their ‘strum along’ format meaning that everyone can join in no matter what their level. They also organise community events and live shows regularly

As you would expect from a city with such a large uke and music scene, San Diego is home to a number of famous players, San Diego band Nickel Creek are probably the most notable local proponents of the instrument.

Probably the most famous uke player from San Diego is Del Rey, although now based in Seattle, the blues legend originally hails from San Diego. Most famous for ‘Dad Blues’ and ‘Atheist Blues’, as well as an internationally respected blues artist, she is also one of the greatest ukulele players today.

Another legendary player is Gerald Ross who organises the city’s main festival. Also a highly accomplished musician, Ross has worked with many of the greats of American folk and blues including Arlo Guthrie and Bonnie Raitt

A more current band hailing from San Diego are Aloha Espana. A collaboration between Pepe Romero and Daniel Ho, they are, as the name implies a fusion of Hawaiian and Spanish traditional music, with incredible results.

Climate note for your ukulele: San Diego is coastal Mediterranean, average humidity 65-75%, daily highs 65-80F year-round. The most uke-friendly climate in the US, full stop. The two specific risks: salt air corrodes hardware (wipe strings after coastal play) and Santa Ana winds in fall can drop indoor humidity to 20% for a week. Don't leave the uke in the car under SoCal sun.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele San Diego

Where can I buy a ukulele in San Diego?

Hale Ukulele on Hazard Way is the dedicated ukulele shop for the whole city. Bondi also ships to San Diego in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Buffalo Brothers Guitars in Carlsbad and Moze Guitars on El Cajon Blvd round out the local options. For a concert mahogany set up out of the box with a hard case, both Hale and Bondi work.

Are there ukulele lessons in San Diego?

More than almost anywhere else in the US. Hau'oli Strummers (900+ members) is the biggest free club. Sneaky Tiki runs Tuesday classes and workshops. Hale Ukulele's Tricialynn teaches Uke 101 for beginners. Sarah Maisel and Terry Carter both teach privately and online. There are also four chapters of the Ukulele Society of America in San Diego.

When does the San Diego ukulele meetup happen?

Hau'oli Strummers runs the biggest meet on Meetup.com (sdukulele). Sneaky Tiki meets every Tuesday. Hale Ukulele runs ongoing classes and beginner sessions. With 900+ Strummers members and four USA chapters, there's something most weeks. Meetup.com search 'ukulele San Diego' is the live calendar.

What's the best ukulele for a beginner in San Diego?

A concert-size mahogany. Soprano is cheaper but cramped for adult fingers; concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook. San Diego's coastal Mediterranean climate is the most ukulele-friendly in the country.

When is the San Diego Ukulele Festival?

Each September, run by Gerald Ross. Two stages, hula, traditional Hawaiian and modern uke styles. The flagship San Diego weekend. The Oceanside Ukulele Festival is the other dedicated North County date, October 10 in 2026.

How long does Bondi shipping take to San Diego?

1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.

Can I find used ukuleles in San Diego?

Hale Ukulele turns over consignment ukes regularly and offers setup. Buffalo Brothers in Carlsbad has a strong used wall. Reverb, OfferUp San Diego, and Craigslist all pull listings. The catch with used: no setup, no warranty, often missing the case. New from Bondi includes setup, a hard case, and warranty.

Why does San Diego have such a strong ukulele scene?

Three reasons. The climate is perfect for solid-wood instruments. The Polynesian and Hawaiian community is large and active. And Hale Ukulele opened a dedicated shop that became a community gravity center. Add Sarah Maisel, Terry Carter, and the four Ukulele Society of America chapters, and you get the densest ukulele city in the US.
