The DALLAS Ukulele Scene
Famous Musicians From Here
When anyone mentions the city of Dallas, Texas the Ewings and their tumultuous fictional relationships centred around oil is one of the first things that spring to mind. But there is much more to this city than the soap-shenanigans. Cotton is also a major trade here and the city is connected to the rest of the USA by an impressive railway network. In the land of the Stetson and the Boot-scootin’ boogie, the music scene is much more diverse than country-songs and line-dancing as one would expect. Classical music is a favourite in Dallas with several events around and a main, dedicated radio station running 24/7.
Any ukuleles in between all those cowboys? Yes, folks. The Dallas Ukulele Headquarters meets at the Richardson Senior Centre once a week for a beginner’s class and all are welcome. The club was founded in 1998 by Mr Mark Levine and they have reached for the skies ever since. With regular performances for senior, children, churches, temples and other interested groups. The group is headed up by Mark and Kathy and if you’d like to join this bunch of ukulele-outlaws, they can be reached on their Facebook group listed below.
For the more tech-savvy of you out there, the Dallas Ukulele News on Meetup.com posts events, lessons and get togethers of all kinds in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. From festivals, strum sessions and performances these guys have all the info you’ll ever need to keep you and your Bondi Uke in the loop. The Dallas Ukulele News can be reached on the link posted below.
Feel like furthering your ukulele education? The Promethean Studios in Dallas are experts in all things musical and they’ve recently added ukulele lessons to their repertoire. They aim to develop players from all backgrounds and any level, and the good news is that your first lesson is absolutely free! That’s right. No commitment or strings attached (except for those on your Bondi Uke, of course). If you’d like to specialize in a certain style of playing the Prometheans can help with that as well including modern folk and indie styles. If you’d like to schedule your first free lesson you can contact the studio directly through their website which is listed below.

If one-on-one lessons sound more like your forte, then Mr Preston Nogar might just be the man you’re looking for. Preston has been playing the ukulele for over ten years and has performed live in churches in the Dallas area as well as contributing to the success of local rock cover-bands. Preston travels as well so you can strum your Bondi Uke in the comfort of your own home, under supervision of course. You can contact Preston through his website which is listed below.
Looks like there’s only one thing left for you and your Bondi uke to do – strap your boots on, don your Stetson and hit the streets of Dallas, where all of your ukulele aspirations lay in wait.
Climate note for your ukulele: Dallas summers run 100F-plus with 50-60% RH and storms; winters are mild but dry indoors (15-20% RH when the heat is on). That swing splits solid tops. Keep the uke in a hard case with a D'Addario Humidipak two-way packet. Don't leave it in a parked car in July; cabin temps reliably hit 150F.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Dallas
Where can I buy a ukulele in Dallas?
Bondi ships to Dallas in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Local options are Charley's Guitar Shop, Hoffman Guitars, Murphy's Music, and the Guitar Center on Preston Rd. For a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct route.
Are there ukulele lessons in Dallas?
Dallas Ukulele Headquarters (DUH) is the heart of it. 1900+ members, founded 1998. Twice-monthly jams that double as informal lessons. Pops Bayless runs occasional advanced workshops. Charley's Guitar Shop does private lessons. For free, DUH is the cheapest, fastest way to actually improve.
When does the Dallas ukulele meetup happen?
First Monday evening of each month and the third Saturday afternoon. Restaurant locations rotate across DFW. Schedule and venue post on the DUH Meetup page (meetup.com/ukulele-84/). Two hours of jamming per session.
What's the best ukulele for a beginner in Dallas?
A concert-size mahogany. Soprano is smaller and traditional, but cramped for adult fingers; concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned, with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook. The hard case is real protection through North Texas summer heat.
Is there a ukulele festival in Dallas?
Lone Star Uke Fest ran in Dallas from 2010-2013 (started by Noel Tardy, the Uke Lady of Texas) but isn't active anymore. DUH runs occasional Premier Events with guest instructors. The closest major dedicated event now is Music City Uke Fest in Murfreesboro TN.
How long does Bondi shipping take to Dallas?
1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.
Can I find used ukuleles in Dallas?
Reverb, Craigslist DFW, Charley's Guitar Shop, and Hoffman Guitars all turn over used ukes. The local shops are more reliable because they actually inspect what they take in. Texas heat is rough on used solid tops left in attics or cars; check the soundhole and bridge for hairline cracks. New from Bondi includes setup, hard case, and warranty.
What music has Dallas produced?
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Erykah Badu, Edie Brickell, Norah Jones (Grapevine), Demi Lovato, Vanilla Ice, Meat Loaf. Deep Ellum has been the city's live music spine since the 1920s. The uke fits the singer-songwriter and folk side of that mix more than blues guitar, but DUH at 1900+ members says plenty of Dallas players found a spot for it.
