The APPLETON Ukulele Scene
Famous Musicians From Here
Overlooking the Fox River, Appleton is known for many things: It’s the place where magician Harry Houdini and literary giant Edna Ferber grew up, and its 1882 Hearthstone Historic House Museum holds some of Thomas Edison’s original light fixtures. But there’s more to this Wisconsin city than celebrity fame. Just as the popularity of the ukulele has grown, the uke community in Appleton, Wisconsin has, too.
Appleton is fast becoming a hub for the mighty instrument, and its numerous clubs are shining a light on the little uke and all it has to offer.
The North East Wisconsin Ukulele Club – or, N.E.W Ukes, for short – are a group of ukulele enthusiasts of various levels of skill who meet regularly to play, sing and have a good time. The club was informally formed back in 2012 by just a few ukulele-loving North East Wisconsin locals, but over the years, N.E.W Ukes has grown to meet semi-regularly with a broad group of members, performing in various locations including downtown Appleton, the Neenah Public Library, and even to open the concert at the 2015 Milwaukee Uke Fest. But you don’t have to be a professional to join in on the fun. As long as you love music and the ukulele, this group is for you. For new and returning members, N.E.W Ukes will post meetings on its website or facebook page .
If you’re passion lies in performing with others, the green bay ukulele club lies just a half hour drive from Appleton, and often performs downtown. With an emphasis is on duets, trios and larger ensembles, the club’s mission is to make any enthusiast a better player and a better person. As they state on their website, there are thousands of ukulele clubs and websites on the internet today. What sets them apart is their focus on getting their members from a beginner to intermediate level of musicianship as quickly and painlessly as possible.
To prove it, they offer some of the best free sheet music and ukulele resources; free club events open to the public, including meetings, open jams, workshops and clinics; private and public performances; and individual and group lessons.
Group ukulele lessons are 45 minutes long and held once a week at Heid Music, 2605 S. Oneida St. in Green Bay. Tuition for a three-month session currently stands at $210 plus a $25 registration fee. Individual lessons are held at the same location and cost $25 per half-hour. A $25 registration fee is also required.
Whether you’re a beginner player or a seasoned veteran looking to dip your toes in every ukulele club you can find, Appleton’s ukulele community is where you should be.
Climate note for your ukulele: Appleton has Wisconsin extremes, humid summers (70%+ in July) and brutally dry winters (humidity drops to 25-30% indoors when the furnace runs). That swing splits solid tops every winter if you're not careful. A hard case with a two-way Humidipak (45-50%) handles both ends. Don't store the uke near a forced-air vent.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Appleton
Where can I buy a ukulele in Appleton?
Bondi ships to Appleton in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. The main local shop is Heid Music on E College Ave, the regional Wisconsin chain. Music & Arts is the other option. For a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct option.
Are there ukulele lessons in Appleton?
Heid Music Appleton runs group ukulele lessons (45 min weekly), private lessons, the Ladies Ukulele Class with Mike Iverson, and the monthly Uke Jam with Friends (4th Tuesday 6-7pm). N.E.W. Ukes meets across the Fox Valley. The meetups will progress your playing faster than most paid lessons.
When does the Appleton ukulele meetup happen?
Heid Music's Uke Jam with Friends runs the 4th Tuesday of every month, 6-7pm, at the Appleton store. Open to teens and adults, all levels. N.E.W. Ukes (North East Wisconsin Ukulele Club) meets regularly across the Fox Valley, schedule on their Facebook group.
What's the best ukulele for a beginner in Appleton?
A concert-size mahogany with a hard case. Soprano is smaller and cramped for adult fingers; concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. The hard case matters big in Wisconsin because winter heating drops indoor humidity below 30%, and a two-way Humidipak holds the inside at 45-50%. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook.
Is there a ukulele festival in Appleton?
Not a dedicated uke festival, but Mile of Music every August is the closest thing in spirit, 200+ free original acts across 70+ venues downtown. The Milwaukee Ukulele Festival in October (1.75hr south) is the dedicated one, and MAUI in Madison runs giant uke singalongs.
How long does Bondi shipping take to Appleton?
1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.
Can I find used ukuleles in Appleton?
Reverb, Facebook Marketplace, and the consignment wall at Heid Music turn over ukes occasionally. Watch for cracks at the soundhole and bridge, common on solid-tops that sat through a Wisconsin winter without humidity control. New from Bondi includes setup, hard case, and a warranty.
What music has Appleton produced?
Cory Chisel and Adriel Denae are the city's biggest contemporary names, and they built the Refuge Foundation and Mile of Music here. Willy Porter is a Wisconsin Music Hall of Fame guitarist. Harry Houdini was raised in Appleton (not a musician but he gave the city Houdini Plaza). The uke fits the Mile of Music singer-songwriter side perfectly.
