Several iconic sights hit you head on when strolling through the streets of St Louis, Missouri. The ever-imposing Gateway Arch, a unique structure that welcomes you to the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle is a marvel in itself. As soon as you manage to tear your eyes away from it, the sound of cheering crowds emanating from Busch Stadium as the Cardinals chase yet another MLB victory to the delight of their dedicated fans. On the street corners among skyscrapers you'll be enticed by the Gerber and St. Paul sandwiches and the famous St. Louis-style pizza.

So, is it even possible that you'll find a single trace of anything ukulele-related here? The answer is simple. Yes.

In true big city style, the Ukulele Fight Club (yes, you read that right) gathers monthly, not in a dingy or dark basement as the name might indicate but at a place called Schnucks Market on Manchester Road. There are two founding members. Stephen Andsagar is a twenty-year veteran on the ukulele and Ashley Ernst picked the instrument up four years ago and hasn't let go of it since, even in between cooking and her daily routine. Classes of various ranges are offered and the chance to join the ensemble in any performances they may have coming up. These ukulele warriors can be found through their Facebook Page listed below.

The St. Louis Ukulele Meetup is a group that consists of players of different levels and is organized by Dr Rebecca G (according to her Meetup.com handle). Events are posted well in advance and themes for each event is laid out on the site notice board. This gathering does not include lesson classes and is more aimed at the sharing of knowledge between players of various ability. This St Louis group can be found at the link posted below.

The Collingwood Ukulele Players, or CPLUG, is a gathering of players of different levels that met up at the library on the corners of St. Marie and Simcoe streets. The bad news - unfortunately this group has been rendered dormant, for now, but the organizers are hopeful that with enough renewed interest and some good old word of mouth the band can reclaim its former spot and continue doing what they love most - Strumming along to some smooth tunes on their Sopranos, Tenors or Baritones. If you feel up to the challenge of helping CPLUG regain their hunting grounds you can contact the phone number listed below. In the meantime, their resources in the forms of songbooks and other related material is still available on the Vintage Uke Music website.

If you're a St Louis local or just passing through with your Bondi ukulele on your back, the "Gateway City" as it is fondly known offers ample opportunity to practice, engage with local talent or improve your own picking skills. One thing is for sure, this busy city, like many others across the United States, doesn't stand back for anything in their work to develop the ukulele scene that we have all come to know and love.

!

Climate note for your ukulele: St. Louis runs 70%+ humidity in summer with thunderstorms, then drops below 30% indoors once the furnace fires up in November. That January-to-March dry stretch is what cracks tops on solid-wood ukes here. Run a sound-hole humidifier through winter (Oasis OH-5 or a Humidipak) and keep the uke off the radiator. Summer storage in the basement is fine. The car in August is not.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele St. Louis

Where can I buy a ukulele in St. Louis?

Bondi ships to St. Louis in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Locally, Killer Vintage on Ivanhoe is the destination shop for serious players, though it's mostly guitars. Music Go Round in Brentwood has a steady used wall that turns over ukes. David's Guitar Loft on Watson Road handles lessons and repairs and stocks beginner ukuleles.

Are there ukulele lessons in St. Louis?

STL Rock School in Olivette runs ukulele lessons for kids and adults. The St. Louis County Library hosts a free Ukulele Jam at the Grant's View Branch you can drop into. For self-taught players, the St. Louis Ukulele Group (SLUG) meets the first and third Thursdays at First Unity Church on Butler Hill Road and is the fastest way to improve.

When does the St. Louis ukulele meetup happen?

The St. Louis Ukulele Group (SLUG) meets the first and third Thursdays of every month at First Unity Church, 4753 Butler Hill Road. Karl Markl founded it in 2001 and it's grown to 160+ members. The Ukulele Fight Club runs a monthly meet at the Schnucks Market on Manchester Road. Both welcome beginners.

What's the best ukulele for a beginner in St. Louis?

A concert-size mahogany. Concert gives you the fret space and a fuller tone for chord-melody work. Mahogany handles the St. Louis humidity swing better than a thin solid spruce top. Bondi's Arcadia Mahogany Concert ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook. That's everything you need to walk into a SLUG Thursday.

Is there a ukulele festival in St. Louis?

No dedicated uke festival, but the Big Muddy Blues Festival on Labor Day weekend at Laclede's Landing has been running since 1986 and is the city's biggest music event. For ukulele specifically, the closest festival is the Chicago Uke Fest in spring or the KC Ukulele Festival, both about a 4-hour drive.

How long does Bondi shipping take to St. Louis?

1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.

Can I find used ukuleles in St. Louis?

Music Go Round in Brentwood is the steady used spot, with consignment ukes coming through every month. Killer Vintage carries a few. Reverb and Facebook Marketplace are active here too. The catch with used: no setup, no warranty, and indoor winter heating may have already dried the top out. Check the bridge and back of the body before you pay.

What music genres has St. Louis produced?

Ragtime (Scott Joplin), blues (Lonnie Johnson, Albert King, Henry Townsend), rock and roll (Chuck Berry), R&B (Ike and Tina Turner), jazz (Miles Davis), and hip-hop (Nelly). The ukulele fits the blues and singer-songwriter side of that lineage. Pick up Chuck Berry's Maybellene rhythm and you're already most of the way to a uke arrangement.
