The ROANOKE Ukulele Scene
Famous Musicians From Here
Between 2010 and 2012, ukulele sales nationwide nearly doubled , jumping from 581,000 to more than one million. By 2017, sales hit 1,750,000, and that number is expected to rise again in 2018.
With no sign of the public losing interest in these diminutive, sweet-sounding instruments, suppliers have even started to cater to the many players who picked up their first ukulele nearly a decade ago with high-end or “alternative” models like banjoleles, bass-ukes and electric ukes.
The little four-stringed instrument is on fire, and ukulele communities across the United States couldn’t be more thankful. The uke boom spreading from coast to coast is bringing more ukuleles and enthusiasts to groups, clubs and meet-ups in California, New York, Florida, and everywhere in between.
Virginia, a state filled to the brim with ukulele enthusiasts, is currently enjoying the wave of popularity the mighty little instrument is riding, too. In Roanoke, ukulele enthusiasts have joined together to create the star city ukulele circle , a group of players in and around the Roanoke, Virginia area that get together regularly to strum and sing.
The Ukulele Circle first met at Mill Mountain Coffee in Tanglewood West in January of 2013. Now, with more than 165 members on Facebook, the group shares their love and appreciation for the uke every Thursday evening at the Cave Spring United Methodist Church.
According to a 2017 news article, the club even has some “groupies” – people who chose to eat in the patio room just so they can hear the music better.
As for song lists, the star city ukulele circle members take turns choosing the tunes they will play from a wide variety of music genres. Everyone around the circle is given a chance to select favourite songs from the group’s growing collection of song-charts or introduce new songs and lead the group in playing.
Ukulele enthusiasts outside the local Raonoke area or those too far to join in on meetings are also welcome to follow the group’s activities and participate in social media discussions. The star city ukulele circle welcomes all levels of ability, knowledge, experience, expertise, gender, and age.
Climate note for your ukulele: Roanoke sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains at 1,000 feet. Summers are humid (70%+ in July) and winters dry out fast when the heat goes on. That seasonal swing is what splits solid tops. A hard case with a two-way Humidipak (45-50%) handles both ends. Don't leave the uke near a fireplace.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Roanoke
Where can I buy a ukulele in Roanoke?
Bondi ships to Roanoke in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Local options are Fret Mill Music Company on S Jefferson, Music & Arts, and Hall's Music Center on Williamson Rd. Most stock entry-level brands; for a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct option.
Are there ukulele lessons in Roanoke?
Fret Mill Music Company on S Jefferson St teaches uke and other fretted instruments. The Roanoke uke scene runs lighter on weekly meetups than Richmond, so private lessons or driving to the UVA Ukulele Lodge in Charlottesville (2hr) is the path most local players take.
When does the Roanoke ukulele meetup happen?
Roanoke doesn't have a weekly dedicated uke meetup right now. The closest is the UVA Ukulele Lodge in Charlottesville (2hr east) or the Triad Ukulele Society around Greensboro NC (1.5hr south). If you want to start a Roanoke group, 5 Points Music Sanctuary is an obvious venue.
What's the best ukulele for a beginner in Roanoke?
A concert-size mahogany with a hard case. Soprano is smaller and cramped for adult fingers; concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. The hard case matters here because of the humid summer/dry winter swing. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook.
Is there a ukulele festival near Roanoke?
Not in Roanoke itself. Ukefest Virginia (Virginia Ukapalooza) runs out of Richmond, about 3hr east. ESVA UkeFest on the Eastern Shore in September is bigger. FloydFest in July (1hr south of Roanoke) isn't uke-specific but the string-band Americana scene there is uke-friendly.
How long does Bondi shipping take to Roanoke?
1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.
Can I find used ukuleles in Roanoke?
Reverb, Craigslist Roanoke, and the consignment wall at Fret Mill turn over ukes occasionally. Watch for cracks at the soundhole and bridge, common on solid-tops that sat in a humid Blue Ridge attic or a heated winter room. New from Bondi includes setup, hard case, and a warranty.
What music has Roanoke produced?
Wayne Newton learned guitar and piano in Roanoke at age 6 before he became Mr. Las Vegas. Bluegrass and string-band music thread through the Blue Ridge tradition, anchored by The Steel Wheels and FloydFest down the road. The uke fits the Americana side of that lineage.
