The GRAND RAPIDS Ukulele Scene
Famous Musicians From Here
Every state in America comes with a nickname: The Sunshine State, The Aloha State, The Big Apple, The Grand Canyon State. To everyone in the United States, Michigan may be better known as The Great Lake State – due, of course, to its abundance of lakes – but ukulele enthusiasts here prefer to call it “The Great Uke State”.
Michigan is no stranger to ukulele clubs, events and festivals. In addition to its nationally famous Mighty Uke Day, which attracts visitors from all over Michigan and the US for three days of ukulele-focused fun, and its Uketoberfest, which features a full day of workshops, concerts, open mics and strumming with ukulele greats like Lil’ Rev and Ben Hassenger, The Great Uke State is also home to a number of ukulele groups and meetups.
In Grand Rapids, the happy ukulele group grand rapids (or, HUG-GR for short) meets on the first Saturday of the month for two hours of strumming and singing. In the group’s initial years, HUG-GR was known as HUG – Hudsonville Ukulele Group. They met at Mocha N Music in downtown Hudsonville, but needed to find a new location when the coffee shop closed in October 2013. The group now meets at Marge’s Donut Den (what better place to hold a ukulele meeting than in a donut shop!) in Wyoming and encourages players of all skill level to join in from 12:00pm until 2:00pm. With two large rooms attached to the bakery that are reserved for playing, HUG-GR ensures that there is enough room for anyone interested in the ukulele to join. The group even provides extra ukuleles for those looking to try the uke out.
There are usually 20-25 ukulele players at any given jam and each can be found playing a different uke: Sopranos, baritones, banjoleles, bass ukes and concert ukes are most often present at every meeting. The group prides itself on its addition of singing as well as uke playing, and can often be heard belting out folk, old gospel, The Beatles, and – of course – Hawaiian tunes. One of HUG-GR group leaders, born and raised in Hawaii, has been playing the ukulele since 1959. With his experience and expertise, new players find they are gently led along with little effort.
And instead of asking members to buy songbooks, HUG-GR provides set lists and songs on their Facebook page, which currently holds an impressive 356-strong following. Song lyrics with chords and relevant chord diagrams are displayed on screen at every meeting with the use of an overhead projector. And for those who want to show off their hard work, HUG-GR has open mic time reserved for natural-born performers.
If you’re looking for a friendly, stress-free group of like-minded enthusiasts to paly with, the happy ukulele group grand rapids is it.
Climate note for your ukulele: Grand Rapids gets the lake-effect treatment. Heavy snow December through March, sub-zero stretches, and indoor heat that drops humidity below 25%. That dryness cracks solid tops. Hard case plus a Humidipak from October through April. Don't leave the uke in a parked car in January or against an exterior wall.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Grand Rapids
Where can I buy a ukulele in Grand Rapids?
Bondi ships to Grand Rapids in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Marshall Music is the long-running Michigan chain with a strong fretted-instrument selection. Guitar Center on 28th Street has a basic ukulele wall. For a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct.
Are there ukulele lessons in Grand Rapids?
Happy Ukulele Group of Grand Rapids (HUG-GR) meets first Saturday of every month, noon-2pm, free, 20-25 players per session. Songs on overhead projector, all uke sizes welcome. Academy of Music GR teaches privately. The monthly group is faster for actual progress than most paid lessons.
When does the Grand Rapids ukulele meetup happen?
HUG-GR (Happy Ukulele Group of Grand Rapids) meets the first Saturday of every month from noon to 2pm. Check their Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/grukes for the current host venue. Folk, Beatles, gospel, Hawaiian repertoire.
What's the best ukulele for a beginner in Grand Rapids?
A concert-size mahogany. Soprano is smaller and brighter but cramped for adult fingers. Concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with hard case, gig bag, and songbook. The hard case earns its keep through Grand Rapids' lake-effect winters.
Is there a ukulele festival in Grand Rapids?
Not in the city itself. Mighty Uke Day in East Lansing (75 minutes east) is Michigan's flagship ukulele festival every May, with James Hill and Sarah Maisel in past lineups. Festival of the Arts in June and ArtPrize in September are the city's bigger general music events.
How long does Bondi shipping take to Grand Rapids?
1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.
Can I find used ukuleles in Grand Rapids?
Marshall Music has a used wall. Reverb is active in West Michigan. Used solid-tops in lake-effect winters often have hairline cracks at the bridge if stored badly. Check the soundhole edge. Bondi includes setup, hard case, and a warranty on every new uke.
What music does Grand Rapids produce?
Mustard Plug has carried Grand Rapids ska internationally for 35 years. The Verve Pipe formed here. The local scene runs heavy on indie rock, ska, and metal, with The Intersection complex as the main launching pad. The uke fits the singer-songwriter and folk circuit at St. Cecilia and Founders Fest.
