Austin may call itself the “Live Music Capital of the World”, but San Antonio is undoubtedly the “Ukulele Capital of Texas”. Before the now-unstoppable tsunami of ukuleles hit peak popularity in America, the south-central city known for the Alamo, great Tex-Mex food and miles-long River Walk was one of the first places in the U.S. to implement a ukulele festival.

Back in 2002, when the humble uke was used more as comedic relief and play toys than a serious instrument in America, San Antonio started the annual Texas Uke Fest. The three-day event (the only one in Texas at the time) celebrated all things ukulele, with hundreds of people travelling to Lions Field recreation centre each year to participate in a busy schedule of live performances, workshops for all levels of playing ability, and a variety of uke-loving vendors.

Now, in a time where the ukulele is riding a wave of popularity as the trendiest instrument for everyone to learn, the city is becoming even better known for its uke-related passion – and at no time is this more evident than during the once-a-month ukulele jam .

Held at the Lion’s Field each month, the group is lead by Beverly Gagliardi, who has been in charge of the uke meet up for several years. The club focuses on all levels of players. All you have to do is show up with your ukulele and a smile.

While the city’s main events are recurring, San Antonio does also play host to a few special performances too. In 2018, the Texas town will welcome ukulele’s most famous virtuoso, Jake Shimabukuro. For just under $50 (or $85 if you’re looking for prime seating and a meet and greet with Jake), ticket holders can listen live to one of the world’s most renowned ukulele players in the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater.

The same year, Jason Mraz – most famously known for ‘I’m Yours’, one of the most-covered songs on ukulele – will also be visiting the theatre.

In the middle of their two performances (Jake Shimabukuro is set to perform in June, while Jason Mraz will perform in March) is the alamo aloha festival . The only statewide cultural festival in the United States, the Aloha Festivals are an annual series of free cultural celebrations observed in the state of Hawaii. It features parades, street parties, concerts, vendors and various other special events.

The alamo aloha festival in particular – held around April of each year – features Islander food, entertainment (expect some ukes!), and fire dancers. In 2018, the event will be celebrating its 22nd annual Aloha Festival at the Traders Village in San Antonio.

Climate note for your ukulele: San Antonio summers run hot and humid, averaging mid-90s with 60-70% humidity, and winters dip dry when a norther blows through. That swing splits solid tops. A hard case with a two-way Humidipak (45-50%) handles it. Don't leave the uke in a car between May and September.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele San Antonio

Where can I buy a ukulele in San Antonio?

Bondi ships to San Antonio in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Local shops are Alamo Music Center downtown (family-run since 1929), Robot Monster Guitars on NW Military Hwy, and H&H Music on the I-10 west side. Most stock entry-level brands; for a concert mahogany set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct option.

Are there ukulele lessons in San Antonio?

The San Antonio Ukulele Meetup runs a free monthly jam at Lion's Field Adult Center. All levels welcome, beginners encouraged. Alamo Music Center downtown teaches private uke lessons. The meetup will progress your playing faster than most paid lessons.

When does the San Antonio ukulele meetup happen?

The San Antonio Ukulele Meetup runs once a month at Lion's Field Adult Center on Broadway. It's a jam, not a class. Their Facebook group has the dates and song lists.

What's the best ukulele for a beginner in San Antonio?

A concert-size mahogany. Soprano is smaller but cramped for adult fingers; concert gives more fret space and a fuller tone. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook. The hard case matters in San Antonio because the summer humidity will move solid wood.

Is there a ukulele festival in San Antonio?

Not a dedicated ukulele festival in San Antonio itself. The closest is the Texas Ukulele Festival in Mansfield (4.5hr drive north). Closer to home, the Tejano Conjunto Festival in May features bajo sexto, accordion, and acoustic playing the uke fits right alongside.

How long does Bondi shipping take to San Antonio?

1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.

Can I find used ukuleles in San Antonio?

Reverb, Craigslist San Antonio, and the consignment wall at Alamo Music turn over ukes occasionally. Watch for cracks at the soundhole and bridge, common on ukes that sat in a Texas car. New from Bondi includes setup, hard case, and a warranty.

What music genres has San Antonio produced?

Conjunto and Tejano (Flaco Jiménez, Lydia Mendoza, Augie Meyers), Tex-Mex rock (Doug Sahm), country (George Strait calls the area home), pop (Christopher Cross), and indie rock (Girl in a Coma). The uke sits comfortably in the conjunto and singer-songwriter side of that mix.
