A-Town. The ATL. Hot ‘Lanta. The Big Peach. Whatever you want to call it, Atlanta, Georgia is known for many different things: Its sports teams (home of the Falcons, Hawks and Braves), the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson International, and its southern hospitality.

The Peach State’s capital city is also where big-time musicians like John Mayer, Usher and Ludacris got their big break. So it comes as no surprise, then, that Atlanta has a thriving music industry and is considered to be a capital of hip-hop, crunk, R&B and gospel music, in addition to a thriving indie-rock and live music scene. Country, classical and blues are also well represented, and as of late, so is the ukulele.

With the recent influx of popularity in playing the uke, Atlanta has become no stranger to clubs, festivals and meetups focusing on the mighty little instrument. Its southeast ukers – a group dedicated to enthusiasts of all levels – meet at the Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ restaurant on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Meeting from 2:00pm until 5:00pm, the group conducts friendly sing-alongs and strum-alongs in a no-stress atmosphere. As the Southeast Ukers state in their meetup.com post , “it doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned ukulele veteran of if you’ve never touched one before. Everyone who wants to play is welcome.”

If you’re a uke enthusiast who wants to join in on the Ukers’ community get-togethers, all you have to do is show up. No annual fees are involved.

While Atlanta seems to be lacking in the festival department – its only ukulele fest, meant to be held in September 2014, had been postponed to a later date – its sister city, Athens, does hold an annual event worth driving to. Every September, the sound of a dozen ukuleles being strummed to the likes of the Beatles fills the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia – a one-hour drive away from downtown Atlanta.

From 2:00pm until 4:30pm, the Athens Ukulele Philharmonic, other local ukuele groups and professional soloists take to the stage at the “i love ukulele” ukulele festival to bring a little bit of happiness to Georgia with their ukulele music. William Tonks, director of visitor services and facility at the State Botanical Garden, also strums along as a semi-professional musician.

The festival, which encourages anyone who loves a good time to come along and play, usually takes place in the Botanical Garden’s Theater in the Woods, a small, outdoor pavilion that has more than enough room for the event’s attendees and their instruments.

If you’re looking for a community that will welcome new ukulele beginners with open arms, you’ll find it in Atlanta, Georgia.

!

Climate note for your ukulele: Atlanta humidity sits at 70%+ in summer with daily afternoon thunderstorms, then drops fast in winter when the heating kicks on. That swing is what splits solid tops. A laminate or a factory-sealed solid-top instrument handles it better than a bare solid top. Keep the uke out of the car, off the radiator, and out of direct sun.

Frequently Asked About Ukulele Atlanta

Where can I buy a ukulele in Atlanta?

Bondi ships to Atlanta in 1-3 days with a free songbook bundle. Local shops worth a visit are Maple Street Guitars in Buckhead, Atlanta Discount Music in Sandy Springs, and Earthshaking Music on McDonough Blvd. Most stock entry-level brands; for a concert-size mahogany uke set up out of the box, Bondi is the most direct option.

Are there ukulele lessons in Atlanta?

Maple Street Guitars and Firehouse Guitars in Decatur both teach ukulele in person. The Southeast Ukers (southeastukers.com) meet at Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ near Emory on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, 2-5pm. It's free, beginners welcome, and it's a faster way to improve than most paid lessons.

When does the Atlanta ukulele meetup happen?

Southeast Ukers run twice a month at the Waikikie Hawaiian BBQ on Briarcliff Road, 1st and 3rd Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. The Sensational Marietta Ukulele Group (SMUG) meets at multiple Cobb County libraries on a rotating schedule. Atlantaukes.com tracks both.

What's the best ukulele for a beginner in Atlanta?

A concert-size mahogany. Soprano is smaller and cheaper but cramped for adult fingers; concert gives you more fret space and a fuller tone. Bondi's concert mahogany ships set up and tuned with a hard case, gig bag, and songbook. That covers everything you need to walk into Southeast Ukers on a Sunday.

Is there a ukulele festival in Atlanta?

Not in the city itself. The closest is the I Love Ukulele Festival in Athens, every September at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. It's about a 1.5 hour drive, free to attend, and built around the Athens Ukulele Philharmonic plus visiting players.

How long does Bondi shipping take to Atlanta?

1-3 business days from our US warehouse via tracked express courier. Free shipping on orders over $50.

Can I find used ukuleles in Atlanta?

Reverb, Craigslist, and the used wall at Guitar Center Briarcliff turn over ukes occasionally. The catch with used: no setup, no warranty, often missing the case. Bondi includes setup, a hard case, and a warranty on every new uke, which usually closes the price gap.

What music genres has Atlanta produced?

Hip-hop and trap (Outkast, Ludacris, T.I.), R&B and soul (Gladys Knight, Usher), indie rock (Black Crowes), and country (Brenda Lee). The ukulele fits the singer-songwriter and folk side of that mix more than the trap side, but the city has the venues for both.
