THE SALEM UKULELE SCENE

Salem, Oregon: A One-Stop-Shop For All Your Ukulele Needs

The sweet sound of the ukulele attracts all ages. From the sandy shores of California to the rolling hills of Kentucky, the mighty little instrument is capturing the hearts of the young and old – and it seems its wave of popularity is here to stay.

In Salem, Oregon, ukulele fans and enthusiasts are coming out of the woodwork to celebrate the diminutive instrument. The Ukulele Fans of Oregon – or, the UFOs for short – are especially great at finding uke lovers and bringing them together for the love of making music.

A group of uke enthusiasts of all ability levels, the UFOs purpose is to, quite simply, have fun with music. Located in Salem, Oregon, the group meets on the third Sunday of every month from 1:30pm until 4:00pm in the Anderson Room at the Salem Public Library. Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate, or a professional, the UFOs welcome you. Those new to the uke community are also welcome to join – all you have to do is bring your ukulele, a smile and the yellow Daily Ukulele book. Mini-classes for newcomers are held from 1:30pm until 2:00pm before each meeting.

Those interested in joining can check out the UFOs Facebook page for monthly song lists, upcoming events and other information about each month’s meeting. And while meetups (and parking) are free, the group appreciates donations and will take them from anyone willing to help out.

If you’re looking to branch out from Salem but still want to stay within the boundaries of Oregon, UFO also holds meetings in Dallas, at the Dallas Public Library on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 5:30pm until 6:45pm. In Woodburn, UFO meets at the Woodburn Public Library from 5:30pm until 6:30pm (dates available on website) and in Silverton, the group meets at the Silverton Public Library from 6:00pm until 6:30pm for beginners only (dates available on website).

Looking for more ukulele playing opportunities? UFO has monthly events reserved for specific skill levels. Mo Bettah Ukes, a free class for advanced beginner and more experienced players, is designed to improve your technique and add artistry to your playing. Meetups are from 7:00pm until 8:30pm at Natural Grocers in Salem on the first Monday of every month.

On the first Friday of every month, the group welcomes all levels for the Corvallis Uke Cabaret. From 7:00pm until 7:30, members can take part in an open mic, followed by a sing-along in a relaxed and jovial atmosphere.

On the second Monday of every month is Mele Ukulele, a fun and friendly ukulele circle that meets from 6:00pm until 8:00om at the First United Methodist Church of Salem. Members are welcome to bring copies of songs they’d like to share.

If you’re looking for a one-stop-shop for all of your ukulele needs, Salem is it.
