THE LOGAN UKULELE SCENE
Aloha Spirit And Uke Communities Galore In Logan, Utah
The ukulele is fairly new to America’s mainland, yet, from the dusty badlands of Arizona all the way to the salty shores of Florida, the mighty little four-stringed instrument is making its mark.
Most of us would imagine larger cities like New York, Los Angeles and Houston to be leading the ukulele’s current wave of popularity with the country’s top clubs, festivals and performances, but – quite surprisingly – it’s the US state of Utah, or more specifically its northern city Logan, that has become a ukulele enthusiast’s destination of choice.
Among the towering mountains, enchanting inland seas, and blanket of greenery that captivate visitors and residents year-round, the soothing strums of the ukulele can be heard regularly. Want to experience it first-hand? The Logan Ukulele Club is a good place to start. They hosts meetings on the first Saturday of every month at 2:00pm on the second floor of the Old Schoolhouse on Wharf Street in Logan Village.
The ukulele club is an easy-going group of enthusiasts that welcomes players of all skill level. They encourage beginners to join, too. Those interested in attending can visit Logan Ukulele Club’s website or send them an email at loganukulele@gmail.com.
For the festival lovers out there, Logan has plenty of opportunities readily available to satisfy your appetite for ukulele-related everything. The Utah Ukulele Festival, usually held around August of every year, is Utah’s one and only free outdoor ukulele festival. Ukulele players of all levels are welcome to indulge in live music, local vendors, free lessons, open mic competitions, tasty food, the Aloha Spirit, and the beautiful culture of the Polynesian Islands.
And if you feel like taking a short trip, the Utah Uke Fest in the Highland area of southern Salt Lake City offers a variety of activities and is only an hour’s drive away. The ukulele community here offers workshops, classes, jam sessions, clubs (check out the Salt Lake City Strummers) and regular meet-ups.
So, whether you’re a new ukulele player or a seasoned pro, if you’re a Logan local with a passion for ukes and like-minded people, get out there and become a part of this rapidly expanding community.
